Be The Butterfly · Youth Healing, Leadership & Emotional Mastery

You were always meant to fly

What it means to Be The Butterfly

We use the journey of the caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly as a guide for young people navigating trauma, anger, uncertainty and change. Believing in the butterfly is what makes entering the chrysalis possible.

  1. Stage one

    The Caterpillar

    Surviving, consuming and coping

    • Survival mode
    • Coping behaviors developed to get through pain
    • Reactions shaped by trauma, stress and environment
    • Doing what works for now

There is nothing “wrong” with the caterpillar. But survival is not the same as fulfillment.

  2. Stage two

    The Chrysalis

The courage to pause and transform

    • Healing spaces and Brave Spaces
    • Reflection, truth-telling and emotional regulation
    • The willingness to pause rather than react
    • Choosing healing over repetition

Old systems break down. New systems begin to form.

  3. Stage three

    The Butterfly

    Integration, flight and purpose

    • Emotional regulation instead of reaction
    • Purpose instead of survival
    • Choice instead of impulse
    • Leadership instead of harm
    • Love instead of fear

Not a better caterpillar. A different being altogether.

The butterfly does not forget being a caterpillar. It simply no longer lives in that stage.

P.L.A.A.Y. · Preventing Long-Term Anger and Aggression in Youth

Anger is information, not a verdict

Many youth are not “angry”; they are overstimulated, under-protected and emotionally overwhelmed. Informed by the work of Howard Stevenson, P.L.A.A.Y. is woven through the whole journey, not added on.

Youth learn to: recognize physical and emotional anger cues · understand how trauma, racial stress and identity threat show up in the body · pause before reacting · choose regulation over reaction · transform aggression into agency.

Through emotional-regulation buildshops, role-play and real-life scenarios, and coaching on anger, shame, fear and dignity, youth learn they have the power to shape how anger moves.
